Develop a Web-based system to translate Arabic text to Sign Language using PDA or the Internet.
b. The system will have video clips for all signs of the Arabic Sign Language Dictionary performed by a single deaf under the same conditions so that it a sentence obtained from any combination of these signs will be uniformed.
c. Signs that do not exist in the Dictionary will be finger-spelled by the same deaf signer
d. The system is expandable in away that new signs can be included to the system and then will not need to be finger-spelled.
e. Link the system to the Web-page of PSCDR for immediate use
f. The system will constitute a first phase of a system that translates Arabic speech to the Arabic Sign Language.
g. Upon completion of this system it may be combined with the system that translates Arabic Sign Language to a spoken language to produce a two-way communication system between deaf and vocal people.
h. This is the first attempt that we are ware of to translate the Arabic Speech or text to Arabic Sign Language
There have been a lot of efforts invested in translating sign languages to spoken languages. However, it is just as important to translate a spoken
language into sign language. This would provide a two way communication between deaf and vocal people. There lacks research, as far as we are aware,
of on translating the spoken Arabic language to the Arabic Sign Language.To start the process, we propose to perform this task in two phases. The
current project constitutes the first phase which translates the Arabic text to the Arabic Sign Language. Additionally, This phase by itself will be beneficial
in since vocal and deaf people can use the PSCDR web-site to perform this transfer on line.
The project will be conducted with the collaboration of a local institute for deaf students (Al-Amal Institute for Boys in Al-Qateef). A deaf adult will
provide all the signs of the Dictionary of Arabic Sign Language that consists of about 1,300 signs. Additionally the signer will produce the sign alphabets
for signs that do not exist in the dictionary. A Sign Language interpreter will also participate for the translation of sign language as well as providing
transportation to the deaf person.
When a preliminary version of the proposed system was presented at the Symposium for Education and Assistive Technology to the Disabled, and
which was organized by the PSCDR, it generated substantial interest fromthe audience.

The final product of the project is a developed system that translates spoken language into Arabic Sign Language. For this purpose, all the signs of the
Dictionary of Arabic Sign Language that consists of about 1,300 signs were taped as small size video clips that can be downloaded to the Internet with
good image resolution in a reasonable amount of time.
