Universal Accessibility Standards in Saudi Arabia

The aim of this project is to create a barrier-free environment that facilitates full participation for all members of society, especially those with disabilities.

Summary

Universal design recognizes that communities are comprised of people with a diverse array of abilities and needs.  Thus, it is imperative that professionals involved in design create environments, structures, and products that are accommodating to the needs of every individual.  This project will review existing national and international accessibility codes.  It will develop comprehensive guidelines and provide the framework necessary to establish a universal accessibility code in Saudi Arabia, this will be in accordance with the 8th article of the diability law which has been formulated by prince salman center for disability research and approved by the royal cabinet in 2000.  UDA will work with key stakeholders in the Kingdom to conduct an audit and inspection. Upon completion, recommendations will be provided for upgrade of facilities.  Additionally, training will be provided for local personnel to perform the audit, inspection, and formulate a comprehensive awareness program.

Our collaborator for this project is Universal Design and Accessibility (UDA) Consultants in Hong Kong.  UDA is comprised of experienced professionals with a global reputation in the area of accessibility design and implementation for all aspects of daily life.  They are among the industry leaders in providing recommendations and conducting assessments that aim to provide barrier-free tourism, transportation, and urban planning.  Other partners in the program include the Ministry of Transportation, the Saudi Commission for Tourism and Antiquities, and the Ministry of Municipal and Rural Affairs and local municipalities.
