Psychological and Social Support to Families of the Disabled

The current workshop entitled “Psychological and Social Support for the Mothers of the Disabled” aims to help the mothers of the disabled children to accept their children and counselling them to the best life practices in how to deal with the disabled child. Mother bear a big responsibility in taking care of her disabled child, all his life details, the vital role his mother plays to make him active and productive person, he may be creative, she may make him passive, complicated, weak-kneed and insensitive child. This depends on the degree that she accepts him, understands his disability and seeking to provide him with needs to grow in a sound way in his small family environment or the society.

The importance of the current workshop is an attempt to shed the light on providing psychological and social support for mothers of the handicapped children because this has a positive effect on satisfying effective and social needs for mothers and helping them to understand themselves and be aware of their feelings and reactions, toward child's disability and this contributes in accepting the disabled child.

The current workshop includes four main pivots. The first pivot treats defining disability, its kinds, and family passive reactions against a child who is born disabled. The most important needs and problems that the family of the disabled child face are demonstrated. The second pivot treats demonstrating factors on which the family accepts or refuses the disabled child. The third pivot treats defining social and psychological support, objective, styles, positive effects on psychological health and social adjustment for the disabled child and his family. Finally, recommendations are offered to mothers of the disabled about how to deal with their children, integrate them in the society. Lastly, a questionnaire will be presented to make the family recognise obstacles of accepting their disabled children.
