Non-verbal Communication for Autistic Children

Most early intervention programs for autistic children focus on developing social communication skills, while focusing little programs to develop the communication skills of non-verbal, which is one of the hard skills of learning, and especially that these children suffer from an imbalance in the use of social language, and show different responses to the emotions, the children ordinary seldom need education directly to acquire these skills, which would be set: skill attention the joint, and eye contact, imitation, listening and understanding, and to distinguish facial expressions and understanding as well as tones of voice function to them, because they gained from imitating adults, during the their play or social interactions. The autistic children, they are rarely able to acquire these necessary skills by watching or imitating their counterparts who are with them in the classroom, but they need to direct instruction, and the formation of the response, and provide incentives and the use of play in order to be acquiring these skills. It is the most successful strategies, policies used to develop the communication skills of non-verbal with autistic children, communication strategies and strategies for behavior modification, in addition to the use of some means educational assistance, as well as activities that help to activate the use of these strategies, develop communication skills in autistic children, as activities configuration, and technical activities, motor and musical.

Dr. Lina Omar Bin Sidiq is Deputy Supervisor of Educational Diploma Program at King Abdul-Aziz, and the recipient of a doctorate degree in counseling and special education in (2005) with high honors from the University of Jordan, a masters degree in Psychology from King Saud University and Bachelors in Special Education, majoring in Hearing Impairment from the University of King Saud.

Her experiences include:

  • Coordinator of the Special Education Department of Educational Diploma at the University of King Abdul Aziz (2008-2010).
  • Assistant Professor, Department of Special Education, Faculty of Dar Al-Hekma, for two semesters (2006-2007).

And her community contributions and posts, including:

  • Attended numerous training courses in the area of specialization and the various sciences.
  • Participated in many conferences and forums with a focus on special needs.

Her research focus includes:

  • Early intervention programs for the development of language in deaf and hearing impaired.
  • Literacy problems with the hearing impaired, and ways to develop the skills to prepare for reading.
  • Preparation and training of staff working with hearing-impaired, deaf and ASD.

She is a member of many committees at King Abdul Aziz University as well as in many associations and charities.
