Workshop on Human Rights YES!: Monitoring and Implementation under the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities

With the adoption and enforcement of the United Nation's Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD), the disability rights movement is gaining ground around the world. Participants will consider the role of the UNCRPD in helping advance these efforts for people with disabilities. Using different participatory methods and lecture, presenters will offer a glimpse of the variety of methods shown to be successful for teaching human rights within the disability community, including persons who have developmental disabilities. The session will also discuss the basic components on UNCRPD, its history and passage, and current monitoring systems for protecting and promoting the rights of persons with disabilities. By seeing examples of successful advocacy trainings, participants will emerge with ideas for taking action in their own countries.

Overall workshop objectives

At the end of the workshop, the participants will be able to:

• Understand the history and role of the UNCRPD in human rights advocacy.
• See how promoting disability rights involves empowering individuals, building disability awareness, and working for systems change.
• Understand advocacy as basic components of creating change and obtaining rights.
• Understand the importance of using a variety of hands-on, participatory approaches to promoting disability rights and change in their country.
• Identify methods for monitoring human rights under the UNCRPD.
• See that no disability human rights efforts will be successful unless people with disability are included at every step, from the very first planning to implementation.
